The 6 types of MSC Cruises ships, explained

The two vessels rank 15th and 13th, respectively, on the list of the world's largest cruise ships — the first Carnival ships to crack the Top 20 in quite a few years. One more ship in the series — Carnival Jubilee — will arrive in late 2023. Symphony of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s second-largest cruise ship, with a gross tonnage of 228,081 GT and the same length as the Wonder at 1,188 feet (362 meters).

Quantum of the Seas Size

This is the first time in the 14-year history of the record-breaking Oasis Class series that a vessel has come close to the Royal Caribbean ships in passenger capacity or size. MSC World Europa offers a major new option for cruisers who love being on the biggest, most amenity-packed vessels. Mega-ships are the biggest and newest of the big ships, generally offering the most restaurants, entertainment venues and accommodation categories in a cruise line's fleet. You'll find the cool innovations you see on a cruise line's TV commercials, the Broadway shows, enormous water slides and expansive kids' facilities.

How We Compare Cruise Ship Sizes – Gross Tonnage

Large cruise ships are known for their grandeur and extensive array of amenities and activities. These floating cities can accommodate thousands of passengers and offer a wide range of entertainment options that cater to diverse interests and preferences. In terms of entertainment, midsize cruise ships often have options for both adults and families. You’ll find dedicated areas for children and teenagers, offering engaging activities and supervised programs to keep younger guests entertained.

Freedom Of The Seas

These are also the ships that Carnival uses for winter sailings to the Caribbean from Baltimore, which can involve a day or two of cold and stormy sailing in the Atlantic. You'll also find a solid array of eateries on each of the ships including a Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina burrito outlets and steakhouses. Two of the three ships — Carnival Breeze and Carnival Dream — also have sushi eateries, while Carnival Breeze and Carnival Magic have Carnival's Caribbean-inspired watering hole, RedFrog Pub. Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama and Carnival Venezia also have teppanyaki restaurants, and all four ships have dedicated chef's tables located within their galleys. In general, Carnival ships are large but, aside from two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards.

When it comes to dining, mega cruise ships are a food lover’s paradise. These ships typically feature a multitude of specialty restaurants, each offering a unique culinary experience. From gourmet steakhouses to international cuisine, there’s something to suit every palate. You can also enjoy casual dining options, buffet-style eateries, and 24-hour room service. Mega cruise ships are the epitome of luxury and extravagance on the high seas. These massive vessels can accommodate thousands of passengers and offer an unparalleled range of amenities and onboard experiences.

These ships top out at just under 140,000 gross tonnage and have a capacity of up to 3,600 passengers, half as much as larger mega ships of today. This was the first class of ships to have a Royal Promenade, a favorite spot for cruisers to enjoy shops and dining. Wonder of the Seas, the newest in this class, is currently the largest cruise ship in the world. They are evaluated based on gross tonnage, which sounds like weight but is actually a measure of the inside space of the ship.

Unfortunately, Explorer’s and Adventure’s amplification were delayed due to the pandemic. While Explorer did not receive a full update, the ship did get the Perfect Storm waterslides during a recent dry dock in 2023. The Voyager Class was the first in the Royal Caribbean fleet to have a Royal Promenade and the Studio B ice rink. The ships also all include a rock-climbing wall, the Flowrider, miniature golf, and a sports court. Further, Wonder of the Seas debuted the first Suite Neighborhood in the fleet. This new neighborhood gives Royal Suite guests the first-ever Suite Sun Deck located all the way at the top of the ship.

Tickets for the smaller ships tend to be cheaper, and there are some real bargains to be had. If you don’t have kids and don’t want to do surfing, zip-lining and all of that, then there’s no point paying extra for a ship that has activities that you won’t take part in. Choose wisely to ensure your cabin provides the perfect balance of belonging and comfort during your cruise adventure. When you choose a specific class, it’s not just about the size or luxury level of your cabin; it also affects the overall atmosphere and sense of belonging on board. MSC World Europa is just the first of at least four World Class vessels that MSC Cruises plans to unveil over the next few years. The next ship in the series, MSC World America, is due in 2025 and is scheduled to be deployed in Florida.

That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships. If you look closely at their deck plans, you'll notice that more of their main attractions are indoors and protected from the elements than the ships of the Icon, Oasis or Freedom classes, for example. The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. Somewhat smaller in size but still giant by any measure, each of the line's five Quantum Class and three Freedom Class vessels has a total capacity ranging from around 4,500 to 5,600 passengers.

Their current fleet of 26 ships which includes two under construction, are grouped into seven ship classes, each with their own base of specific common features. Dream-class ships also offer water parks with waterslides on their top decks, miniature golf courses, sports courts for basketball and volleyball, and multiple pools. The second Vision-class cruise ship which began sailing in May 1997. Rhapsody of the Seas has 12 passenger decks which is still the same as the larger Radiance-class ships. When Royal Caribbean began building Quantum-class ships, it was the first time that the line had ever decided to build ships smaller than those that had come before.

At Carnival, as at other lines, the biggest ships in the fleet have the most amenities, eateries, lounges, bars and deck-top attractions than the smaller ships. This can be a huge plus for travelers who like to have a lot of options when vacationing. This is a notable change for the brand from just a couple of decades ago. There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. However, for many years, it has held back from following rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships. Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ships on the list of the world's 50 biggest cruise vessels.

Royal Caribbean is an American cruise line headquartered in Miami, Florida. It was founded in 1968 in Norway by three Norwegian shipping companies and the first ship to sail for the company was Song of Norway in 1970. At around 139,000 tons, the ships are about 11% smaller than the Freedom Class ships. Each vessel has more than a half-dozen places to eat, including the main restaurant, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant and an Asian venue.

The ship measures 962 feet (293 meters) in length and falls in line as number 23 among Royal Caribbean's 36 existing and former cruise ships. At full capacity, the Serenade of the Seas holds 3,027 passengers. The Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas total number of staterooms is 1,013.

With the introduction of the Icon of the Seas, the cruise line now has seven classes and 27 ships. It can be a lot to consider when picking a cruise, with so many great choices. That said, the two remaining Fantasy-class ships have undergone renovations over the years to add more balcony cabins. Depending on the ship, there were between 98 and 150 new balconies added, including new suites. The two Fantasy-class ships that are left are mostly used in secondary ports — such as Jacksonville, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama — that might not be able to support bigger vessels.

Ships are not designed to be kid-friendly, with no dedicated facilities and only some sparse programming during school breaks. Entertainment options for adults are limited, and generally don't share the wow factor of shows on larger ships. Loyal passengers are content with more low-key activities, such as chatting over drinks, playing trivia or reading by the pool.
